Where is Philip K. Dick when you need him?

Can you imagine the dystopian, paranoid novels Dick could've written if he had lived to see half the population of the country walking around with their eyes, ears and minds constantly fixated on tiny electronic devices held in their hands?

Most people think that I'm a weirdo because I often don't carry my cellphone, instead leaving it either at home or in the car.

    1. Tom, do you realize I actually move around in a city of 8 million people every day, as opposed to living in a whole county of 40,000 or whatever Bumhick, Arkansas has? I ride the subway and see the actual behavior of thousands of people per day, as opposed to glancing out of the car window at a pig farmer now and then?

I watch people getting off the train everyday, and 9 out of 10 of them are looking at their smart phones as they exit, praying for a signal. I'm sure it is not yet as popular as cousin marryin' where you are, but if it is popular in NYC now, it will be where you live at least within the next century or so.

"A recent survey by Boost Mobile found 16-25-year-olds so addicted that 31 percent of respondents admitted to servicing their social accounts while “on the toilet.” And a Retrevo study found that 11 percent of those under age 25 allow themselves to be interrupted by “an electronic message during sex.”

"A Retrevo study showed 28 percent of iPhone users check/update Twitter before they get out of bed, while 48 percent do the same after they’ve gone to bed." -- http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/twidiocracy_719178.html?page=2
